Market Maker Trading Strategy
A Market Maker is not trying to predict direction. They are managing inventory and getting paid for providing liquidity. Understanding that job changes how you read every level on your chart.
The mindset difference
A retail trader asks "where is it going?" A Market Maker asks "what do I have on, and what does it cost me to get out?" Price moves are a by-product of inventory being managed. When a desk is long too much, offers come down until the position clears. When a desk is short into demand, offers get repriced higher.
Sellers control price. Every up-move is supply being withdrawn and repriced higher. Every down-move is supply being added and pressed. Buyers are never in control — they are the reason sellers reprice.
Where the edge is for you
- You can stand aside; they cannot. A desk has to quote. You can wait for the one level per session where supply is obviously heavy or obviously gone.
- You can trade one instrument. Depth of knowledge on ES or NQ beats shallow coverage of twenty symbols.
- You can size to zero. Your worst day is capped by a decision. Use that.
A Market-Maker-style setup: the inventory flush
- Context: a fast, one-way move away from VWAP into the edge of the balance zone — the signature of a position being cleared rather than a new trend starting.
- Entry trigger: the move stops extending at the balance edge, volume spikes, and the next candle fails to make a new extreme. Enter on the reclaim back inside the balance zone.
- Stop: hard stop beyond the flush extreme plus noise.
- Target: session VWAP first, then the opposite balance edge. Scale a third at VWAP.
- Risk sizing: 1% of account, stop distance decides contracts.
- Invalidation: price accepts outside the balance zone — two consecutive closes beyond the edge with volume building. That is a real move, not a flush. Out.
What not to copy
You do not have a desk's capital, quoting obligation, or hedging book. Do not imitate their averaging-in behaviour. Adopt the reasoning, not the position management: one level, one trigger, one hard stop, sized so no single trade matters.
